Thomas Brownlie, born 1827, Parkhead Lanark, Scotland, died 10 September 1882 at Nunawading.  Thomas was married firstly on 20 June 1852 (Reference 821/ 0090 0134 Brownlee marriages 1538-1854) at Thornhill, Dumfries, Scotland, to Isabella Wallace (Ross), (widow), born c1823, Thornhill, Dumfries, Scotland and died 5 January 1863.  The couple, with Isabella's son, James Wallace Ross, immigrated to Australia. After a short time in Tasmania they settled in Victoria in 1854.  Thomas worked as a baker, before joining the Victorian Police Force, where he was employed as a blacksmith and store man from 26 April 1858 until his resignation on 22 May 1882. Isabella's son (Uncle Jim) later became a farmer in the Goulburn Valley.

1. Robert Wallace Brownlie, born 17 September 1856, died 1933. Lived at "Park Head Cottage", Bloomsbury Street, East Collingwood. Robert worked with leather, being a saddler and coach builder/trimmer, with his own business in Collingwood. Eight children were born to Robert and Agnes, between 1879 and 1895. Isabel, the eldest, was born in St. Kilda where, at one time the family lived in Wilson Street, and at another in Crimea Street. The family also resided in Keep Street, Warnambool, before returning to 19 Long Street, Elsternwick, during the late 1890's. Isabel Francois, Elise Marie and Lucy Martinet Brownlie owe their names to their mother's French ancestry, while Robert Brooke indicates the link with her father. Their third son Ross, writes of his mother Agnes, 'my mother was a favorite in our home — she was well educated, an accomplished pianist, and always cheerful. We were a very happy family, although we also had our reserves, particularly when, after land investments during the Victorian land boom, the bottom fell out of the market. However, my father had sufficient cash left to buy a partnership in a large coach-building factory at Warnambool. The Powell grandparents followed us down there, and we enjoyed the years spent in visiting this house. In 1956, I found that 11 houses had been built on its former orchard.' The children of R.W. Brownlie had an upbringing in which a degree of military discipline and order was ever present, except when their father was absent on camps etc.!  Robert participated in the early forms of the militia, maintaining a precise approach to all matters, including the carving of a roast, which was done with military precision and unchanging routine. The McConchie family has an antique cruet set which was presented to "Sergeant Saddler" Brownlie of "B" Company in 1897. Another link with his past is a well-made leather valise, which is still being used by his grandson, Thomas James (Jim) – this was always understood to be part of his army equipment.

Robert's Military Service was with the Victorian Volunteer Corps. He was awarded the Long and Efficient Service Medal in 1900 (for 20 years service). Details of this award are reported on page 110 of 'The Victorian Long and Efficient Service Medal 1881-1901' by R.D. Williams, F.R.N.S., another reference is made on page 102, namely, 'Field Artillery Brigade: Collar make Sergeant R.W. Brownlie No. 1331'. Married in Balaclava on 28 March 1878 Agnes Maryborough Powell, born 16 October 1854, died 1941. The French background of the Powell family accounts for some of the given names of the Brownlie children. Thomas Brooke Powell, the father of Agnes, was born on the island of Jersey, where he met Jeanne Francois Martinette, whose name was later Anglicized to Jane Frances Martinet. Her family fled from France at the time of the Revolution, and suffered much hardship and humiliating conditions before finding refuge in Jersey. Both Jeanne and Thomas were born at St. Helier, and on their marriage certificate their ages were listed as 27 and 24 years, respectively. Jeanne's father, Alexis, was a musician and Jasper, father of Thomas, a mason. They were married on 5 May 1850 at St. Helier, the island's main town. Thomas became a Master Mariner, holding certificate No. 6171, dated 30 April 1852. He made several voyages to Australia, and later in 1852 was accompanied by Agnes. On arrival at Hobson's Bay his crew deserted, due to 'gold fever' leaving the couple stranded. He finally took his young wife to the goldfields at Maryborough to try his luck at prospecting, but their family background was not suited to this rugged life and, following the birth of their daughter, Agnes Maryborough Powell, the family returned to Melbourne. It has been claimed that Agnes was the first child born on the Maryborough goldfields; it is more likely though not substantiated, that she may have been the first white girl born in the district. After leaving the sea, Thomas Powell's occupations varied from surveying to building, and in this regard he carried out extensive work for Sir Frederick Sargood at Rippon Lea; at the time of his daughter's marriage, his occupation was recorded as a builder.  He was deeply religious; he and his family frequently walked from St. Kilda to the City (Melbourne) to hear Dr. Gosman preach.

1. Robert Brooke Brownlie, born 5 December 1885, died 9 January 1942. Married on 26 September 1915 Evelyn May Arnott of Hamilton, born14 November 1878, died 8 December 1971. Robert worked as a coachbuilder in his father's business.  After their marriage they moved to Western Australia and took up farming near Perth. Two of their children, Gwen and Jim, were born there before the family moved back to Glenhuntly, Victoria in 1921, where Evelyn was born.  When the motor industry became adversely affected by the depression, Brook, took his family to a property near Maldon and returned to farming between 1929 and 1933. They returned to Melbourne and eventually settled in Blackburn.  During World War II their daughter enlisted in the A.W.A.S. and Evelyn and Fred Truman (A.I.R.) were married 12 May 1945 in Wesley Chapel.  Their son, Jim, served as F/Lt. with the R.A.A.F. and U.S.A.A.F. and married Brenda Harrison in the Blackburn Presbyterian Church 24 April 1948.

Married 15 July 1915 in Trinity Congregational Church, St. Georges Terrace (this church was also used for the wedding of one of their daughters and also a grand-daughter) Susan May Hambridge, born 22 August 1888, died 3 September 1984, left St. Kilda and travelled across to the west where they were married.  Ross and May celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary before his death.  During his commercial career, Ross played an active and responsible role on may government and bank committees, boards, etc., he worked with Professor Wadham on Commonwealth Soldier Settlement Schemes after World War II, some of the later appointments he held were — Secretary, Agricultural Bank 1935-1943; Secretary, Commonwealth Government Reconstruction Commission 1943-1944; Commissioner for Rural Bank 1945; Chairman of W.A. Housing Commission in 1949 until his retirement in 1954. His work in these fields, has been commemorated by, the naming of 'Brownlie Towers', a housing complex in Bentley, Perth.

Training Centre, Canungra.  In July, 1943 he was appointed Adjudant, 3 Australian Training Battalion (jungle warfare), and served in that capacity and as Acting Staff Captain until he was demobilized on 4th March 1945.  Prior to enlisting, he was teaching at School No. 3251, Leongatha South". Ian David Boyd Prince born 11 July 1939 at Leongatha, was married secondly on 5 March 2005 to Judith Annette Medwin, nee Ferrall of Roseberry, Tasmania[15].

Thomas Brownlie, secondly Married on 12 April 1865 in East Melbourne to Keir Smith,  (also referred to as Keir Pilson), born 1840 Perth, Scotland, died 1877 Victoria. They lived at Port Fairy for sometime and finally bought an orchard property in the area between Middleborough and Dorking (previously named Doncaster) Roads, Box Hill (Nunawading).

They had Issue:

1. Jane Craig Brownlie, born c1866.

2. Annie Brownlie, born c1868.

3. Alice Brownlie, born (?) died 1882.

4. Isabella Brownlie, born c1877.

Thomas Brownlie thirdly Married 4 May 1878, Fitzroy, Ann Begg, (also known as Ann Fithi), born 1836, Carthy, Scotland, died Victoria, Australia, 1909. Ann was the stepdaughter of a neighbouring farmer, John Fithie (Ann's mother, Charlotte Duncan, had been married firstly to William Begg).  They lived in Box Hill, with their daughter Jessie, until 10 September 1882 when Thomas was killed in an accident involving a horse and dray on Whitehorse Road.  Thomas, Ann and Jessie are all buried in the Box Hill Cemetery.  Aunt Jessie is still remembered as a very attractive old lady.
